In a game that had everything, the Clinton-Massie Varsity Falcons battled through nine innings before securing a dramatic 7-6 walk-off victory over Batavia on Monday night at Clinton-Massie High School. With the score tied 6-6 in the bottom of the ninth, Kylie Chavez stepped to the plate and delivered the game-winning moment—lining a single that brought home the winning run and sent the Falcons into celebration. Batavia struck first, plating a run in the opening inning behind a Delilah Whitescarver RBI single. They added to their lead in the second when Grace Newsome launched a solo home run to center field, giving Batavia early momentum. Clinton-Massie answered in the third, tying the game behind an RBI single from Izzy Penewit and a run-producing fielder’s choice by Kalli Jodrey. However, Batavia regained control in the fourth, highlighted by a Chloe Meyer RBI double and another run-scoring hit from Newsome to stretch the lead to 5-2. The Falcons refused to back down. Ava Crombie ignited the comeback in the fifth with a two-run home run to center field, cutting into the deficit. Penewit came through again in the sixth with an RBI single to even the score at 5-5. The back-and-forth battle continued into extra innings. Batavia reclaimed the lead in the eighth on an RBI single by Berkley Schmittou, but Clinton-Massie responded once again in the bottom half, tying the game at six on an RBI groundout by Annie Baker. In the circle, Crombie was dominant despite the long outing, going all nine innings while striking out 13 batters and allowing six runs (three earned) on nine hits to earn the win. Offensively, the Falcons totaled 13 hits on the night. Chavez led the charge, going 3-for-5 at the plate. Penewit and Crombie each drove in two runs, while Leia Kairn added a pair of hits. Clinton-Massie also applied pressure on the base paths, swiping four bases. For Batavia, Newsome had a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with three RBIs from the nine spot in the lineup. Schmittou also contributed with two hits. Clinton-Massie will look to carry the momentum into their next matchup as they host East Clinton on Tuesday.
