Goshen Edges Clinton-Massie in Tight Pitcher’s Duel

By Brian Carey | May 4, 2026 5:45 PM

In a game defined by dominant pitching and limited opportunities, the Goshen Varsity Warriors narrowly defeated the Clinton-Massie Varsity Falcons, 3-1, on Monday. Both teams showcased strong performances in the circle, but Goshen capitalized on key moments to secure the win. Ava Crombie delivered an outstanding outing for the Falcons, going the distance and recording all 21 outs. The right-hander struck out 10 batters while allowing just three hits and three runs over seven innings, keeping Clinton-Massie within striking distance throughout the game. The Warriors broke through in the fourth inning when Skye Shaw launched a solo home run to left field, giving Goshen a 1-0 lead in what quickly became a defensive battle. Clinton-Massie continued to rely on Crombie’s consistency in the circle and flawless defense behind her. The Falcons did not commit a single error, with Kylie Chavez leading the way defensively with 10 chances handled cleanly. The game remained tight until the top of the seventh inning when Margaret Showmaker delivered the decisive blow—a two-run home run to left field—to extend Goshen’s lead to 3-0. The Falcons were able to push across one run, but couldn’t generate enough offense against Goshen pitcher Makayla Campbell, who earned the complete-game victory. Campbell allowed just three hits and one unearned run over seven innings, striking out six without issuing a walk. Offensively, Crombie led Clinton-Massie at the plate, going 2-for-3. For Goshen, Josie Purdy, Shaw, and Showmaker each recorded a hit, with Showmaker driving in two runs on her late-game homer. Despite the loss, Clinton-Massie’s strong pitching and defensive performance kept them competitive throughout in one of their most tightly contested games of the season. The Falcons will look to bounce back as they travel to Goshen for a rematch on Wednesday.
